The capital, Riga is a beautiful city dripping with unique architecture and can be visited on our amazing new ‘Baltics of Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga’ tour. Its medieval Old Town and surrounding areas were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1997. The traditional Art Nouveau Latvian architecture is notable throughout the city and contributes to the city’s distinct landscape. Divided into two by the River Daugava, the Old Town is situated on one side and the Central District on the other. Single travellers can explore the post-war and Soviet remains which includes the mighty St. Peter’s Church. Alternatively, for something more unusual, visit the Sun Museum – a museum that depicts the role of the sun in Latvian culture.
If you are seeking a festive getaway this year, then Latvia is the perfect little getaway with its authentic Christmas markets that sell traditional Latvian goods and have lots of little medieval old towns to explore with your solo traveller companions. Other festive markets can be found here, and are the perfect way to fit some last minute shopping in!
