The Maldives are a group of ancient coral reefs that grew up around the side of large, prehistoric volcanoes. The volcanoes have long since disappeared leaving behind islands grouped in ring-shaped formations. Often considered the ultimate in long haul luxury, the Maldives is virtually a by-word for paradise with its clear, bath-like waters and fantastic beaches. Here, life takes on a wonderful simplicity, with little to do but relax and let the sun and sea ease away the tensions of busy modern life.
If the lounging around all becomes too much, however, then dive (or snorkel) beneath the waves to experience the other wonder of the Maldives; a different world of colour and beauty. Becoming ever more respected as a dive destination by divers in the know, the Maldives has some excellent coral but it is the abundance of fish life that sets it apart from other diving destinations. Within and around the many atoll lagoons can be found a plethora of fish, manta rays and sharks.
